We believe that the fundamental need of
individuals is spiritual in nature. Our lives do not cohere without
meaning in life. Nothing is more important
than institutions that provide a belief in this.
The greatest institution to meet these needs
is the church. The church is not the invention of man, but of God. He has
established the local church and He promises to work in and through it to
accomplish His purpose.
The church is the only
institution that does not have to invent or create its principles of
operation. They are given to us in the Word of God. Every church seeks to
live by and live for five Biblical principles.
Magnify and Worship
First, we are committed to
worshipping and magnifying God. The church is called to worship and glorify
God. In Acts 2:47 we read that the first churches devoted themselves to
“praising God”. The main purpose of the church is to exalt and worship
God. In worship we declare the worth and value of God.
Missions and Evangelism
Secondly, we are committed to
missions and evangelism. Every church and individual Christian must take up
the commission of Christ in Matthew 28:18-20. We are called by Christ to
share the gospel with every person, locally and globally.
Membership
Thirdly, we are committed to the
local church. God makes promises to the local church. He promises to work
in and through it. In Matthew 16 Jesus promises that the church will be a
prevailing church; it will succeed in its mission. We encourage you to
commit yourself to a local church and to seeking the growth of the kingdom
in and through its endeavors.
Ministry and Small Groups
Fourth, we are committed to each
other. God works in individual lives not solely through His Word and
Spirit, but through the ministry of other believers. In the Scriptures we
are given over fifty “one-another commands”. We are called to love one
another, pray for one another, bear one another’s burden’s, be hospitable
toward one another, etc. In addition to this God has gifted each of us to
minister to others in unique ways. Grace Covenant Church provides a forum
for personal ministry in its small groups.
Maturity and Education
Lastly, we are committed to the
Christian lifeview and lifestyle. Ephesians 1:17 encourages us to grow in
our knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. We desire to take every thought
captive to Christ and live a life worthy of the calling to which he has
called us. Our educational venues provide opportunity for growth in our
understanding of God, ourselves and the world.
Purpose Statement
Grace Covenant Church seeks to
fulfill each of these five principles in a Biblical and balanced way. Our
purpose statement tells us why we exist and it is written in such a way as
to be memorizable and quickly remind us of these principles that we work
toward.
Our purpose statement is: Grace Covenant
Church exists to glorify and cherish God by being a
gospel-centered church with a great commitment to the great
commandment and the great commission.
(Great commandment = Matthew 22:34-40, Great commission = Matthew
28:18-20)
Each of the five principles is found in this
purpose statement: Grace Covenant Church exists to glorify and
cherish God (Magnify) by being a gospel-centered church with a
great commitment (Membership) to the great commandment
(Magnify and Ministry) and the great commission (Missions and
Maturity).
